Delta Delta Delta was founded on November 27,1888, at Boston University on Thanksgiving Eve by Sarah Ida Shaw, Eleanor Dorcas Pond, Isabel Morgan Breed, and Florence Isabelle Stewart. They sought to "found a society that shall be kind alike to all and think more of a girl’s inner self and character than her personal appearance." By the first anniversary of the founding of Delta Delta Delta, there were three chapters located in three different states. By 1900, the sorority had grown into 18 collegiate chapters, including the first in the South and the first on the West Coast. In 2010, Tri Delta became one of the largest national sororities with 138 active chapters. The Delta Mu chapter was founded at the University of Alabama in 1914.
